Santé Magazine

I was pleased as punch to see my photos in print in the October issue of Santé, a premier magazine for restaurant managers and chefs. I just received a quality PDF of it, or else you would have seen it much sooner. The recipe these photos were shot for was Vegetables and Gravy in Pastry Boxes. Link to the full magazine article is here. Thanks to the editors of Santé for featuring my work!
Another PSA

Sorry, this is “take care of odds n’ ends” day here on SFTF. Another Public Service Announcement (although it should really be labeled a Shameless Self-Promotion Announcement) is to let you all know that SFTF has been nominated for the 2008 Bloggers Choice Awards and I’d love to get your vote! The closing of the polls always sneaks up on me so I don’t really remember when the last day to vote is, but it’s best to vote early as it pushes this humble blog up through the ranks so more folks can discover it and learn how tasty and beautiful local food is! Follow the linkbelow to cast your vote, for which I whole-heartedly thank you!

For the Locals :: Black Olive Opening

Here’s a Public Service Announcement of sorts for all you lovely readers that reside in Philadelphia, particularly in the Mt. Airy neighborhood. The restaurant, Black Olive, is officially open for business. This mid-range eatery is an extension of the already operating Black Olive delicatessen. The restaurant is all vegan with most items on the menu having a southern flare (Taylor, you’d best come be the final judge on how tasty this all is).
I attended their grand opening soiree Friday evening where they were serving a smattering of their dishes as lite party fare, including vegan crab cakes and African peanut soup (both scrumptious). I was most taken with the chocolate pie though. Silky creamy and chocolately…and vegan to boot!

Their website doesn’t appear to be up and running just yet (http://blackoliverestaurant.com/flash/BlackOlive3.html). Their phone number is 215.247.5100. The restaurant is located just off Germantown Avenue on E. Mt. Airy Avenue in the heart of bustling quirky Mt. Airy (oh beloved ‘hood o’ mine).
I’ll be going for a full dinner some evening soon and will report back. In the meantime, give this new business some of your business to show support for local eclectic dining options.
Celebrate!

What did you do to celebrate Earth Day?
I planted a couple baby Metasequoia (redwood) trees.
Fun!
(that’s not a metasequoia above; it’s a magnolia)
Au Naturel

I wanted to alert you all to a great contest being held this month over at Jugalbandi. Bee and Jai put on a great monthly photo event called Click!, a contest I’ve been fortunate enough to win in the past. But I’m even more excited this month because 1) it’s all about showcasing fresh raw ingredients and 2) they’ve asked me to be one of the judges.
Now, as a judge, I’m allowed to make an entry that won’t be up for winning any of the awards but is meant to illustrate the month’s theme with pizzaz. It took a lot of humming and hawing on my part to finally pick which photo to enter, but I finally went with yesterday’s shot of the fiddleheads. They’re just too cool to pass up. But, as you might all realize, this little blog of mine is all about au naturel so there were many photos that qualified. I decided to post a few more here to celebrate the theme in coordination with Jugalbandi and Click! contestants.

If you have a good au naturel food photo, be sure to get it entered in the Click! event. The last day for entries is April 30th. Photo-to-enter or no-photo-to-enter, be sure to visit Jugalbandi to look at all the great entries already streaming in.
